Ranking 12 Buffy The Vampire Slayer Characters – Worst to Best

I have no idea what happened here. I originally posted this almost two years ago, then it was gone. So slowly I have been working on this post, getting out all my anger and love for the show. I revamped it, THEN saved it because I don’t want to lose it again. I removed Oz, Joyce, and Kennedy this time around because meh. I also added Buffy! Thank you WOTW for pointing out that the page was blank.

I picked today’s date to post this because on March 10th 1997 the pilot of Buffy aired. Who would have thought that 20 years later people would still in love with this show? Just a warning, if you love Angel and Xander then this isn’t a ranking that you should read.

I hope you guys enjoy my ranking of BTVS characters. Major spoilers ahead!

Xander a.k.a The Original Fuckboy a.k.a Garbage

tumblr_inline_mp2hk0uimr1qz4rgp

Where do I begin with Alexander Harris? He is the product of two neglectful parents and I thought I could relate to him based on that, but I was wrong. From the un aired pilot to the most recent comic, my hate for Xander Harris knows no boundaries. I hated Xander Harris with every fiber in my being. He is the worst human imaginable and I still question why the gentlemen in Season 4 couldn’t take his heart.

There aren’t enough adjectives in the world that I can string together to emphasis my utter dislike for this character. Xander is jealous, annoying, judgmental, hypocritical, useless, rude, and nasty. I did not like how he treated the other characters. He was judgmental on Buffy’s choices and the men she dated, he always played with Willow’s emotions and abused the fact that she had a huge crush on him, he cheated on Cordelia with Willow because he felt threatened by Oz, he used Anya half the time as a sex object, was rude to Spike, and rude to Angel.

Xander was supposed to be the comedic relief because he was the only Scooby who didn’t have any powers and that would make the audience identify with him. With that said, the whole idea failed miserably, I did not find anything Xander said to be funny, and I couldn’t identify with him. Xander made zero effort to improve himself and just wanted to reap the benefits of being part of the Scooby gang. He also never gave any type of good in sight on anything. Way back in Season 2 he turned into a soldier which caused him to retain military knowledge and training, something that he would refer to sometimes in situations. However, I don’t understand why he wouldn’t want to brush up on some reading, or take a few karate classes.

His friendship with Buffy is something that made me cringe. Xander always came off as if he was entitled to her. He patronized her, put her on a pedestal, and acted as if she should have dated him. Buffy was a strong woman and he wasn’t used to it. I think that’s what intrigued him the most, yet he treated her poorly, and was a lousy friend.

tumblr_mra3pfadlk1rv1lxvo1_500
Exactly. Shut the fuck up.

In season 3 episode 2 he oversteps by butting into a conversation that Buffy is having with Joyce and says some really harsh fucked up shit.

Joyce: Buffy, you didn’t give me time.  You just dumped this thing on me and you expected me to get it.  Well, guess what?  Mom’s not perfect, okay?  I handled it badly. But that doesn’t give you the right to punish me by running away.

Buffy:  Punish you?  I didn’t do this to punish you!

Xander:  Well, you did.  You should’ve seen what you put her through.

Buffy:  Great.  Thanks.  Anybody else want to weigh in here?

Xander:  You know, maybe you don’t want to hear it, Buffy, but taking off like you did was incredibly selfish and stupid.

Buffy:  Okay!  Okay.  I screwed up.  I know this.  But you have no idea! You have, you have no idea what happened to me or what I was feeling!

Xander:  Did you even try talking to anybody?

Buffy:  There was nothing that anybody could do.  Okay?  I just had to deal with this on my own.

Xander:  Yeah, and you see how well *that* one worked out.  You can’t just bury stuff, Buffy.  It’ll come right back up to get you.

Buffy:  As if I even could’ve gone to you, Xander.  You made your feelings about Angel and I perfectly clear.

Xander:  Look.  I’m sorry that your honey was a demon, but most girls don’t hop a Greyhound over boy troubles.

*Cordelia tries to help then Willow wants to chime in*

Xander:  Let her finish!  You at least owe her that.

Buffy:  God, Xander!  Do you think you could at least stick to annoying me on your own behalf?

Xander:  Fine!  You stop acting like an idiot, I’ll stop annoying you!

Buffy:  (steps up to Xander) Oh, you wanna talk acting like an idiot, Nighthawk?

Who the fuck does he think he is? I get that he isn’t the brain or the brawn, but where the fuck his is heart? Why is he lashing at Buffy instead of talking to her like a normal person? What kind of friend says that? Buffy tries to defend her actions, but Xander chimes in and just throws jabs. Unfortunately this pattern doesn’t change. He continues to be a jealous man child and hurl insults. Xander never has a true character arc. He went from a high school fuck boy loser to a bitter construction worker who feels entitled to people. In season 6 there are two more times where Xander oversteps his boundaries.

S6 E19

Buffy: You have no idea how hard it is just being here.

Xander: You could have told me.

Buffy: You didn’t want to know.

Xander: So you went to him instead?

Buffy: Xander, what I do with my personal life is none of your business.

Xander: It used to be.

Buffy: It just happened, okay?

Xander: (chuckles bitterly) Oh, like, uh, “Say, you’re evil. Get on me”?

Buffy: You fought side by side with him when I was gone. You let him take care of Dawn.

Xander: But I never forgot what he really is. God, what were you thinking?

Also in that same season he says more fucked up shit, but he says it to Dawn. Now I am not a big fan of Dawn but Xander had no right to do what he did a few episodes later.

S6 E22

Dawn: Well, feeling sorry for yourself isn’t helping either, Xander. Y’know if Spike was here, he’d go back and fight.

Xander: Sure, if he wasn’t too busy trying to rape your sister.

Dawn: What?

Xander: Forget it.

Dawn: I don’t believe you.

Xander: Fine.

Dawn: He wouldn’t do that.

Xander: Is this blind spot a genetic trait with you Summers women? The only useful thing that animal ever did was finally leave town.

I truly can go on and on about Xander. My hate for him has no boundaries. If I could erase him from the entire fandom I would because his character was so damn irrelevant. I know he saved Buffy in S1 and Willow in S6 but I still despise him. He was not strong in any sense, he is useless, and is just this hyped up cheerleader. The only time I smiled when he was on TV is when he got his eye poked out.

Dawn a.k.a The Crybaby

tumblr_oigxs5ohf81vcpprxo1_r1_400
Kill me now.

Oh man where do I begin with her. I couldn’t stand Dawn with a burning passion. There are 3 reasons why I hate Dawn. She ruined the Summers family, she constantly whined, and she was a pain in the ass. I appreciated the story behind Dawn but the girl had zero character development from s5-s7. She had no real friends, no real love interest, and no type of character arc. In s5 she was annoying and in s7 she was just as annoying. s5 should have ended with Dawn sacrificing herself. HOWEVER that didn’t happen and what we got was this whiny child running around crying that she’s not a slayer, wishing she was a potential slayer, and stealing things. In S7 this bitch kicked out Buffy. Yes, this bitch, kicked out her LEGAL GUARDIAN WHO SAVED HER CRY BABY ASS ON A REGULAR out of her own house.

tumblr_oglqryimhu1rerzc4o3_400
Yes. Pain and hurt for my fucking eye balls.

Things Dawn Said That Pissed Me Off

“I just think you’re freakin’ out ’cause you have to fight someone prettier than you. That is the case, right?”

“Yeah well, I’m telling Mom you slayed in front of me.”

“Spike has a chip. Same diff.”

“When do I get to patrol?”

Angel a.k.a Worst Than Edward Cullen

tumblr_inline_mkov50frdz1qz4rgp
But you are boring Angel. A boring broody waste of space.

I hate him. Not so much as Riley but just as much. I understand that Angel and Buffy are the ultimate OTP for some people, but I could’t stand Angel. I hated him so fucking much. I am going to list the reasons why, I mean if I were to go in depth I may be here for hours (and I already spent enough time analyzing Willow).

  • He is selfish. For example, leaving Buffy in S3 (I was happy about this though)and having sex with Buffy in S2 knowing that it would take away his soul. Don’t give me that bullshit on how he didn’t know. He did know.
  • He always looked like he was going to cry.
  • He was always brooding.
  • He came off as always so creepy.
  • ALSO HE DIDN’T EARN HIS SOUL LIKE SPIKE DID.

Riley a.k.a Not Angel

tumblr_ocdoudmuf31uzfvhto1_500

A lot of people hated Riley because they shipped Buffy hardcore with Angel. I, for one shipped Buffy with Faith, but that’s another blog post for another day. I firmly believe a part of him, deep down, was hoping Buffy would give up slaying one day, and run away with him to Nebraska or something. Also, he was so dull and boring. I would rather watch paint dry then to deal with Riley. He always said he understood what it was to be slayer but let’s be real, he didn’t.

When we were first introduced to Riley he was so sweet, awesome, and hot to look at. I was hoping that he could provide the normalcy that Buffy needed and wanted. Then they got into a relationship and he turned out to be apart of the whole army squad thing. I honestly wasn’t too bothered by that one but then Riley turned into a cry baby. He was needy and cried constantly that that Buffy wasn’t allowing him to take care of her. He seemed like the type of guy who just wanted a wife, and when he came back in S6 with his new wife I wasn’t surprised. The dude was an emotional wreck.

Tara a.k.a Meep

tumblr_ojc89y2l5j1se3cnno6_400
Shhhhh stop talking.

Reasons Why I Couldn’t Stand Tara:

  1. Boring.
  2. Her stuttering frustrated me.
  3. Not funny.
  4. She always wore weird clothes that covered her up way too much.
  5. She was so simple.

But I am going to stop with this list. I felt Tara was created to bring out Willow’s flaws and make her look bad. Tara had no spine and she reminded me of Willow S1 and I couldn’t see how they found each other attractive or anything. I felt no sexual chemistry between them. Her death shocked me, but once again, it was just to make Willow the Big Bad of S6. Willow is no saint either, she treated Tara pretty crappy during S6, but more on Willow later.

Giles a.k.a Dr. Manhattan

tumblr_nnwx3gs7ee1tr9ml1o1_500

Besides Buffy’s mother, Giles provided a sense of stability. Regardless of what teenagers may say, they don’t know everything, and need guidance. The Scoobies had that with Giles. Also, Giles thought of the greater good instead of what made him sleep better at night. However, are a few moments that stick out to me that make me want to karate chop him.

In S3E12 Giles hypnotizes and injects Buffy with adrenaline suppressors and takes away her powers. I don’t know about you but I am 100% against a slayer unwillingly partaking in a cruciamentum. I felt that even though Giles is mostly for the great of good, he should have known that the whole thing is barbaric, and let her know. I also don’t like how he tries to butt into her love life. He was anti Angel (I still hate Angel though) for a while and also anti Spike.

I also think Giles should have helped out Buffy financially after her mother died. He expected her to just do everything and then he bounced to London to live happily without a care in the world. When he did that then came back during s7 I didn’t look at him the same, he reminded me of a deadbeat dad leaving Buffy the way he did. Granted he wasn’t her father, and it wasn’t his job to help her but he could have. I love Giles but sometimes he needed to take several seats.

Spike a.k.a Not Sid Vicious

tumblr_n8293esev81qzmkxio1_500
Yes you were.

Ah Spikey. Where do I begin? He is the epitome of Bad Boy. When someone says, “Bad Boy” I think of Spike. Before I drool over my keyboard I am going to list the reasons why I like him.

  • He dedicated himself to Buffy.
  • His accent was flawless.
  • He is witty with awesome come backs.
  • His charming level is at 100
  • He keeps it real. (Well as real for a vampire)
  • Those cheek bones are just magnificent.
  • He reinstated his soul for Buffy.
  • Speaking of souls. He loved Buffy before he had a soul. Can’t say that about fuck face Angel when he was Angelus.
  • He treats Buffy like an adult.

But, with all good things… sigh… with all good things, this love list must come to an end. So, we all know what Spike does in S6E19…. I know it and you know. For those who don’t, he tried to rape Buffy and that muddles my feelings for him. Up until that moment, I was in love with Spike, and then once he tried to rape Buffy it was just a feeling numbness.

Cordelia a.k.a Ms. Bitch

tumblr_oj7zravtfp1rlr3tno4_250

I could never get into Angel but from the little episodes I’ve seen I noticed a huge change in Cordelia. She wasn’t the vapid airhead she was in Buffy. I loved her sass and her smile (I had a HUGE crush on her). I felt that she could have done a hell of a lot better when it came to dating. I mean really, Xander Fuckboy Harris? That’s who you date? That fucking dweeb? Gosh. Anyway, I liked her in BTVS, but I hear she is majorly hated in Angel. I wouldn’t know, I haven’t watched The Soulful Vampire Mope Show enough to formulate the plot.

Common Cordelia Words of Wisdom:

“And what if she is, exactly? What are you gonna’ do about it? In case you haven’t noticed, you’re the lameness and she’s the super chick or whatever.”

“This is great. There’s an unkillable demon in town, Angel’s joined his side, the Slayer’s a basket case, I’d say we’ve hit bottom”

“You’re a sheep. All you ever do is what everyone else does, just so you can say you did it first. And here I am, scrambling for your approval, when I’m way cooler than you are, ’cause I’m not a sheep. I do what I want to do, and I wear what I want to wear, and you know what? I date whoever the hell I want to date. No matter how lame he is.” *Granted she is talking about Xander in this quote which proves how awesome she is and how much of a tool Xander was. He deserves to be alone.*

“Gee, Xander, and what are you gonna’ to teach when you fail in life? Advanced loser being?”

“Planning life as a loser? Most people just turn out that way, but you’re really taking charge.”

“And once again, the gold medal in the being wrong event goes to Xander “I’m as stupid as I look” Harris”

Willow a.k.a Complex Cookie

tumblr_ojhpwlltjq1r6n1b3o3_1280

Maybe I have a thing for red heads? Who fucking knows, what I DO know is from S1 to S7 Willow goes through a HUGE change. She went from:

Cry baby hetero “nobody loves me” geek

Baby dike with an interest in Wicca

Smart kick ass lesbian witch that can skin you alive.

It may seem that I bash Willow but I do like her character arc a lot. I like the change she makes from Season 1 to Season 7. As a former psychology major I had a good time dissecting her character and feel that she should be used as an example of children who are neglected (more on that later). Willow to me was the most changed and each season she was different compared to the previous. So I know present to you:

Ranking Willow for the 7 seasons of BTVS – Hate to Love

S1 – Hated her so fucking much

Willow in S1 is a passive aggressive loser that is so eager to please Buffy and anyone around her and it makes me sick. Her role in the scooby gang is semi useless, but despite that Willow finds a place where she belongs, and her eagerness is due to the fact that she gets satisfaction of feeling wanted. But I still hate her this season. S1 Willow is just a little shit. I don’t like her awkwardness and her obsession with Xander.

S2 – Hated her in S2 just as much in S1

Willow is still the passive aggressive nerdy loser she was in S1 with a slight twist. During the last episode of the season, she restores Angel’s soul, and has shit eating grin when she gets asked to do so. The fact that Willow thinks she knows it all is what sets her up for a big downfall. After casting the spell she says something along the lines as feeling something going through her. After re watching the series, all I could think was, “Yeah, your future downfall.” She’s also dating Oz in S2 but they are a boring couple this season. S2 Willow is just like S1 with the addition of a mute boyfriend and some magical abilities.

S3 – Hate her, but not as much as before.

I don’t care for Willow as much because my baby Faith makes her appearance. I don’t love Willow this season but my hate for her does dwindle down. I don’t condone the cheating she does with fuckboy Xander and when they took part in shady activities, like making out and playing footsie, I wanted to gag. Willow in S3 is sort of coming to her own she is really into the magics. I find it funny that she clearly has issues yet she pokes fun at Faith for making some mistakes which I don’t appreciate. In this season Vamp Willow (which to me foreshadows her falling in love with a woman in the future and eventually being a big bad) makes an appearance with an eerie catchphrase, “bored now” that comes back in S6. Also, Willow loses her V Card with Oz.

S4 – Hate her still but I have come to understand her character

Now this is the pivotal moment in Willow’s life. She is no longer in the small confines of high school and she has the chance to start fresh. By this point we know a lot about Willow. Both of her parents are nerdy professors who are so focused on their jobs they could give a fuck about Willow. We see that just like Xander she really has no relationship with her parents but it’s on a different spectrum. Willows parents are driven and thus their careers take over all their time versus Xander whose parents just drink and fight. Willow’s burning need to feel accepted is why she strives so hard in school, for once she wants her parents to notice her. Also the fact that she was bullied in her primary years add on to that. She is neglected emotionally at home and she is bullied at school, this leads for her to be very passive aggressive, and contributes to her magic addition we see come to surface a bit this season.

Oz cheats on her this season because the actor wanted to leave so Joss decided to fuck up his character. 1st Willow tries to kill herself but Riley and or Buffy (I don’t remember) saves her, 2nd she decides, “nah I’ll live but I will get some revenge.” She writes a spell for revenge and it’s so fucked up. Willow seems to forget she cheated on Oz way back when. I am not saying two wrongs make a right, but the crazy and blood thirsty revenge side of Willow is showing more and more. For those who think that Willow isn’t blood thirsty for vengeance, tell that to D’Hoffryn who offers to make her a vengeance demon when her magic goes a bit wonky a few episodes later. *Sips tea*

Oh and she starts dating Willow from S1 Tara

S5 – I Like her a bit

We see Willow do more magic every day and not care that she is becoming addicted to it. She grew up sheltered, neglected, bullied, and as kids like that grow they tend to do some questionable things. Her magic addiction is no surprise. We see her and Tara do relationship things, Tara tries to tell Willow to calm down with the magic but Willow doesn’t care. I like this Willow, she has flaws but she isn’t as annoying like in S1. One thing that ticks me off is that Tara is very much like Willow in S1, we all know that Willow tried hard to shed her nerdy self, yet she dates a girl who is very much nerdy.

S6 – I Love You Willow Rosenberg…. but you fucking up

I love this Willow. Everything she has done has lead to the Dark  Willow we see in S6 and I love it. First things first Willow is beyond vain when it comes to her magic ability. She uses magic probably more than she changes her underwear and she brings Buffy back to life from the dead.  The shit she says to Giles when he calls her out is off the wall and I love it.

Willow: You’re right. The magics I used are very powerful. I’m very powerful. And maybe it’s not such a good idea for you to piss me off.

Willow uses magic on Tara to make them stop fighting because finally Tara is opening her mouth to Willow, and Willow does not like to be magically challenged. It causes some major issues because Tara’s mind was hijacked by cutey pie Glory in S5. Anyway, when Tara leaves her we see Willow is able to turn Amy back into a human and they do some damage, and Willow spirals down the rabbit hole further. She gets high off of magic, gets into a car wreck, gets slapped by Dawn, and finally is at rock bottom. When this happens she decides to avoid magic and tries to win Tara back.

Eventually she gets Tara back but unfortunately Tara dies shortly after their reunion. When that happened I knew Willow was going to go ape shit and I was at the edge of my seat just waiting for it.  Tara was the support she had other then her friends. Her death was a huge blow to Willow that pushed her to finally absorb all the magic she can find and become Dark Willow.

The vengeance is back folks as we see Dark Willow destroy Warren with not a care in the world and I love it. Her magic has consumed any ounce of humanity it could and now she’s unstable and I love it. She meets with her magical drug dealer and kills him by draining him of all his magic. She taunts Dawn, she fights Buffy, and I love it. The madness is such a beautiful display of years or neglect and need for acceptance. Sadly though, I have to say I was disappointed that her punishment for nearly causing the damn apocalypse wasn’t harsh. She got a free vacation to England while my baby Faith had to go to prison. Willow in S6 was  a hot mess and I love it.

S7 – I Love You Willow Rosenburg

So my baby Willow, (yes she’s my baby now) is in a magic rehab type thing in the beginning of S7. Although S7 wasn’t my favorite, Willow was my favorite character. She had been through a lot, lost a lot, and was finally moving on the right track. She is with Kennedy and struggles with her magic use. She’s the reason why all the potential slayers were activated.

giphy

Willow is a strong and dynamic character. I see a lot of myself in Willow in regards to her feelings dating and wanting to shed a personality trait. My goal wasn’t to bash her, I don’t want it to come off that way, I like her character arc a lot, and felt that out of every character on the show she truly grew and changed the most.

Anya a.k.a My Mistress

giphy1

I didn’t like Anya the first time around when we are introduced to her, at first I thought she was going to be the lesbian love interest for Cordelia because they looked cute together. Come to find out shes a demon who grants wishes to women that were hurt by their husbands / boyfriends. I thought it was ironic that she ends up with the man she is supposed to curse which is none other than fuckboy Xander Harris. One thing I loved about Anya was her brutal honesty, I also thought her love for money, and fear for bunnies was hilarious. However, sometimes I felt that she couldn’t create an identity separate of the men who had wronged her. Her husband cheated on her, since she was so filled with vengeance D’hoffryn comes and takes advantage of that making her a vengeance demon. When she fails with Cordelia, she becomes human, and falls for Xander the man who she was supposed to curse. After Xander leaves her at the alter she goes back to her demon ways and we see Xander judge her because hes a piece of shit. All in all, I love Anya, that speech she gave when Joyce died hurt my soul, and I was so sad when she was killed in the series finale.

Faith a.k.a My Girlfriend

tumblr_lz9mphzlzb1qft5qh

Before I talk about my honey Faith, let me just say how much I love Eliza Dushku. I fucking love Eliza Dushku. Okay moving on. Faith was obviously supposed to be the anti Buffy, everything Buffy could have been if she didn’t have her mother, friends, and watcher. After Willow, Faith has some good character evolution.

When people talk about Faith they normally attach the words psycho, insane, and evil. I never took Faith to be any of those things, to me she was neglected, manipulated, abused, preyed upon, and misunderstood. She tried to integrate herself into the Scoobies in S3, but Buffy had her head FAR too up Angel’s ass to see otherwise. Instead Buffy was always hostile and short with Faith. Also, let me remind you that Faith was sixteen or seventeen years old with no parents and practically homeless.  As we see with the First Slayer, there is violence that comes with being a slayer:

I have no speech. No name. I live in the action of death, the blood cry, the penetrating wound. I am destruction. Absolute… Alone.―Sineya (more commonly known as The First Slayer)

Violence and being alone is something that Faith understands one hundred times more than Buffy would. Although Buffy (because she was the only slayer) always felt alone, she had a strong support system that Faith and previous slayers didn’t have. Faith considered herself a god in regards to normal teens, she had no problem saying she was one of the Chosen two, and could do no wrong. Buffy was always the cookie cutter of the two… obviously. But besides that Faith had it hard. Her mother was a drunk, her father was a murderer, her first watcher was murdered, her 2nd (fake) watcher betrayed her, Giles didn’t really care for her, and Wesley failed her. With all of that the Mayor knew EXACTLY what Faith needed for her to do his bidding, a parental figure.

tumblr_m2hqr7y6ij1qbvyqv

She killed innocents, loved it at some point, but it got to where she could no longer escape it the truth. She was just a confused girl not given the proper guidance, life gave her a shitty hand to play, and she made all the wrong moves.  We saw how she thought of herself when the body swap happened, and self hate is never good. Despite her faults she did end up redeeming herself. I mean she found redemption when she was sent to murder Angel (I kind of wish she would have) but he helped her out.

giphy2
CAUSE YOU LOVE HER! JUST ADMIT IT!

Faith realized she needed help, went to jail, broke out only to help Angel, and helped with the main fight. I won’t bash her for her choices because she owned up to them, she bit the bullet, and went to jail. She didn’t have to go to jail but she did. Willow happily killed Warren and where was her jail time? Oh because she’s Willow she just goes to a spa day in England? I don’t think that Faith enjoyed killing people, the minute she killed her first human she regretted it, however her pride, and slayer ego got in the way. I refuse to be harsh on Faith because I can identify with her, I know what it’s like to feel not good enough, she took responsibilities for her crimes, and will forever struggle with that. She is like the Deadpool of BTVS.

Buffy a.k.a My Wife

tumblr_lxn2700eea1qattipo1_500

I don’t want to state the obvious that has been listed so many times before. We all know Buffy is brave, honest, pretty, has a big heart, and a whole bunch of other positive traits. Buffy was an amazing and selfless character, she did save the world… a lot. What I like about Buffy is that she has faults just like everyone else. She’s not good at picking significant others (she should have married Faith) which stems from her daddy issues and really needs to seek some therapy. I’m not trying to troll you guys, Buffy is my favorite character on the show but she wasn’t flawless.

THE IDIOTS SHE DATED

Angel – She thought he was a human. Soul or not Angel is a vampire, the creatures she kills on a regular basis.

Scott – Got bored with Buffy and dumped her. “Following their break-up, Scott spread malicious rumors that Buffy was a lesbian, but ironically came out as gay himself years later in college.” What an ass.

Parker – I have an eye for spotting a fuck boy a mile away. Parker charmed his way into Buffy’s pants and then has the balls to say, “Well, you know the difference between a freshman girl and a toilet seat… toilet seat doesn’t follow you around after you use it –“

Riley – All American cutie who turns out to be a solider who then ends up being a clingy whiny cry baby.

Spike – Another vampire. The funny thing is that out of the three main idiots, Spike is who exactly what he claims to be, and doesn’t try to be something he is not.

Buffy can’t pick a normal person to be with is because her own father is a deadbeat. As a chick who has a deadbeat dad I sometimes have a hard time trusting and picking the right person so I can relate to Buffy. Sometimes I felt that the whole little miss perfect routine was just a cover up for her insecurities. She never wanted to feel as if people were questioning her motives, after all she is the slayer.

badass-female-tv-and-movie-heroines-01

Another thing I didn’t like was how easily she forgave others. She forgave Giles for shooting her up with anti Slayer dope, she forgave Angel for his bullshit (I DON’T CARE ABOUT HIM NOT HAVING A SOUL I DO NOT LIKE HIM), she forgave Willow for almost starting the apocalypse, she forgave Xander constantly for his slick mouth, and she forgave Spike for almost raping her. I mean its not a bad thing to say fuck off. I always wished that she would have told someone to fuck off but she didn’t. I mean she wasn’t quick to forgive Faith.

I think she did all of this was because Buffy doesn’t like to lose people. She already lost her father, then her mother, and even Giles abandoned her for a while. I love Buffy, she may need some therapy but I do love her.

Man this was a long one. So what do you guys think? I love a debate when it comes to Buffy. Let me know your thoughts!

21 thoughts on “Ranking 12 Buffy The Vampire Slayer Characters – Worst to Best

      1. I loved the show, I like how the characters were written, minus fuckboy Xander & crybaby Dawn. I always found it to be a complex show about the supernatural that wasn’t cheesy at all.

        Like

  1. Dawn is by far THE worst character in my opinion. I could barely get past season 5 back then because of her, and now rewatching it I can barely get past it now hugely based on her.

  2. I can’t stand Angel, either! I always thought it was because I watched the show as an adult and he represented the epitome of foolish adolescent “love.” It made a lot of sense to me that they didn’t end up together – Spike made a lot more sense (especially the bit you noted about him treating her like an adult).

      1. Haha yeah. I felt a wave of relief when I found out Whedon was against the Angel storyline from the start – and even more so when he said “I’m a Buffy/Spike shipper” lol. The brooding though, omg the brooding. It was endless. And also – what is attractive about some 200 year old lurker being all cryptic and pining after a 15 year old? It’s just straight up uncomfortable to watch. I also didn’t like the idea that being CURSED with a soul makes him inherently good. That’s not how that works.

      2. Spike earned his soul and loved Buffy before he even had one. Wasn’t Angel like 26 when he became a vampire? So he was a grown man acting all creepy and crushing on a child. Slayer or not, Buffy was 15 so she was a child. Watching their love story unfold made me cringe! Then from what I hear he was creepy and cryptic with Cordelia on Angel. Liam had a thing for teenage girls apparently.

      3. I think I physically shuddered during the flashback that shows he was creeping on her before she became a slayer – and says he loved her even then. UH NO. NO NO NO. That’s not cool. And Angelus is his more natural state anyways, so I never saw anything good in him. And Liam didn’t seem like a winner either. I liked that Buffy and Spike always mirrored each other, and that in the later seasons he’s learning how to be more of a person and she’s learning how to be more of an adult. It was a nice parallel. The relationship was super complicated but felt more real than anything that she and Angel ever had.

  3. This makes me want to re-watch the show. I grew up watching it and when I was still of the age of make-believe, instead of playing princess or house, I played Buffy the Vampire Slayer, using sticks as steaks and fighting imaginary bad guys. 🙂

  4. This post made me realise how much I dislike Xander as a character, and what’s more that that is ok! Thank you! Totally agree about Faith too, I wish there had been a Faith spin off, but we still got to see Eliza Duzku being awesome in Dollhouse… so that was a bonus. I do like Tara though, controversial I know!
